The Last Frontier

If you have ever dreamed of hunting Alaska but are overwhelmed about planning, paying for, and executing the trip - look no further. We have done the legwork for you on planning and executing this trip, and good news, it is actually very affordable. On top of that we will include an extensive gear list of what we brought since we just completed the trip a couple of months ago in June of 2024.

In this article we are going to:

  • Share the highlights of our recent DIY Alaska Coastal Bear Hunt and fishing trip
  • Spill the beans on how you can do this hunt
  • Provide an extensive gear list for what you will need to bring with you to have an enjoyable and successful hunt.

Overview

The style of this hunt is DIY spot and stalk coastal black bear hunting with the weapon of your choice. You will essentially be traveling, eating, sleeping, and fishing on a large charter boat - then when it’s time to bear hunt, you will load into a smaller skiff boat and be taken to shores, inlets, bays, and other areas where the bears like to be. Depending on the time of year and the weather, bears will either be cruising the beaches looking for clams, fish and mussels, or up in the mountains eating green grasses and looking for small prey.

The Misty Fjord Charter boat that was stayed 5 days on sitting in a remote bay in Alaska while surround by beautiful snow capped mountains.

It is important to note that the charter crew are not guides, again, this is a DIY bear hunt. The crew can not spot bears or otherwise assist you in harvesting a bear other than feeding you, providing you shelter, and taxiing you around. With that being said, if you are not comfortable hunting, cutting up, and packing out your own bear, this hunt may not be for you. But for those of you wanting to experience a true adventure where you’ll have to put in the work - this is for you.

When you aren’t cruising around looking for bears, you will be experiencing the most action-packed fishing of your life on the charter boat for rockfish, cod, halibut, and salmon. I almost failed to mention, when you aren’t bear hunting or fishing, you are also eating incredible food that you either just caught, or that was harvested in Alaska. We ate the fish we caught, blacktail, moose, mountain goat, and bear on this trip. Garrett, the charter owner and boat captain, is an incredible cook.

2024 Coastal Alaska Black Bear Hunt Adventure: The Hunt

Day 1: Travel

Erik Van Woerkom walking through the Salt Lake City, UT airport with his luggage headed to board a plane from Utah to Seattle.

We spent the day flying from Salt Lake City → Seattle → Anchorage, Alaska. We then picked up a rental truck in Anchorage and drove to Homer, Alaska where we rented an Airbnb and stayed the night.

Day 2: Out To Sea

We woke up at sunrise and met Garrett and his crew at the Misty Fjord Charter Boat that was sitting in the dock. We got a rundown of the boat, schedule, and expectations and then took off across the ocean in search of premier black bear country. After a few hours on the boat we stopped to drop lines in the water. In less than 5 minutes everyone on the boat was limited out on black rockfish and a few others caught yellow-eye rockfish, halibut and other miscellaneous fish. We then continued on for additional 3 to 4 more hours until we reached a bay where we would hunt bears for the evening.

We knew from the beginning that we were only going to have a day and a half or so of good weather before a large multi-day storm would be hitting. That night Erik, Tyler and myself hit one small inlet and Joe, Cody and our cousin Chad hit a larger bay. It wasn’t long before swirly winds and sideways rains hit and we ended up back in the charter boat soaking wet.

Day 3: A 2 Bear Day

It was a beautiful third day in Alaska terms, meaning, cloudy with only slight rain and wind. We hit the fishing right off the bat and again limited out on black rockfish within minutes and caught other fish like gray cod, a couple of halibut, and yellow-eye rockfish.

After fishing and an incredible meal, we again split up to go look for bears. While Erik, Tyler and myself were on our way to the shore to get dropped off by the skiff boat, a black bear popped out of the thick timber onto the shore just as we were getting dropped off a few hundred yards away. Tyler grabbed his bow and Erik and I got our cameras and we started pursuing this bear that was meandering along the beach. As soon as we made it to within 100 yards of where the bear had been he disappeared back into the timber never to be seen again. A hard hitting storm hit soon after and it was back to the boat.

Meanwhile across the bay Cody, Joe, and Chad had much better fortune than us. Moments before the storm really picked up they spotted a big bear grazing on grass on the side hill just a few hundred yards from where they had hiked into. Our friend Cody spotted the bear, got down prone across his pack, and hammered the bruin with a 180 gr Hornady ELDM out of his 7 PRC. In the video of this hunt, you can see that moments after they shot this bear the winds from this storm really picked up and started dumping rain sideways on them. They got that bear in the nick of time. First bear of the trip down.

Where we had been hunting previously was open ocean, but due to the storm that was hitting we took off in the Misty Fjord to a tucked-away secluded bay that we hoped and anticipated would keep us safe from the storm. As we entered the bay the improved weather was noticed immediately. We knew this would have to be our home for the next few days as this storm raged.

After another incredible meal, we still had 6-7 hours of bear hunting left due to the fact that it doesn’t get dark until almost midnight that time of year. We again split up into groups and Erik, Tyler and myself climbed up on a nice glassing knob looking into beautiful high-country basins and overlooking a good looking shoreline. It didn’t take long to spot bears, and a lot of bears at that. We spent the next few hours looking over 12-15 black bears. Unfortunately, none of them were cruising the shores where we could chase them with our short-range equipment (Erik and Tyler brought bows, and I had a 45-70 lever-action rifle). They were either across the bay from us or at the tops of the mountains.

"We heard a couple of shots ring out."

While wallowing in our lack of good fortune, we heard a couple of shots ring out. During a nice glassing/napping session Cody, Chad, and Joe had a bear feed down to the shore around a hundred yards away from them. Luckily Joe had awakened from his nap in time and let Chad know about the bear. Chad leaned up against a fallen down tree and placed a perfect shot on another bruin. 2 bears in one day - not bad at all.

Day 4 & 5: Awful Weather, Great Fishing, & Lots of Eating

The storm finally settled down on us in all its glory and the next two days were filled with heavy, unrelenting rain and wind. Not even the safety of our cove saved us from this magnificent storm. While anchored in the bay, the winds were so fierce that the charter boat spun in circles. The rain was dumping so hard that we couldn’t even see the shoreline at times which was only a couple of hundred yards away.

To keep our spirits up during this time we left the bay once to get some black rockfish fishing in, glassed for bears from the charter boat when we had small breaks in the weather, played games, told stories, and enjoyed some amazing homemade meals. We even glassed up a few black bears that came out during those small breaks of weather but they quickly retreated to the timber.

The Muley Freak headed out to bear hunt on the skiff boat with heavy rain dumping on top of them on the ride while surrounded by beautiful snow capped mountains

We were even desperate enough that we took off multiple times in the skiff boat covered from head to toe in rain gear in torrential downpours to sit shorelines in hopes that we would get lucky. But as you could probably guess, the bears didn’t like the 40 mph wind and heavy rains.

Day 6: Homeward Bound

We left early in the morning knowing we had a long boat ride ahead of us. About halfway back to the dock we stopped and had an incredible hour of rockfish and halibut fishing for the purpose of taking fish back home with us to share with our families. The weather was of course blue skies and gorgeous as the storm finally broke the last day of our trip.

Our good friend that owns Homer Fish Processing met us at the dock to snag our fish so that he could quickly get them processed. Due to our planes leaving early the next morning we decided to get some dinner at a local pizza place, check in our black bears at the local fish and game, complete our paperwork to get our processed fish shipped to our houses, and then took off back to Anchorage to return our rental truck and make our flights.

This Alaska Black Bear Hunt was a adventure of a lifetime, one that we would highly recommend to anyone willing and wanting of an adventure. See details below of how to book this trip and what gear to take with you.
